Surrounded by secular olives groves,immersed in the quiet of the green Umbrian hills,Il Castello dei Montali dominates one of the most beautiful view of the Trasimeno Lake (360 degrees). Situated in the district of Panicale,this medieval settlement riceives its name from the feudal lords that resided there.Historical research dates the origin of the "Castrum Montalis"to the XI century.In this period the towers and surroundindg walls were built. From the XIII century was subjected to the powerful municipality of Panicale and as it was the highest and most impregnable castle of the area it became a keystone of Perugia's defensive sistem. |
| In 1402,during a period of rebellion against the Pope and of Perugia's submission to the Viscount of Milan ,Il Castello dei Montali was conquired by the papal troops but Perugia won it back only one year later. | |
| By the end of the XV century,the Priors of Perugia erected a new tower and fortified the walls,that were to be dameged in '1600 during the Barberini war. This medieval village,so rich in history,has been brought back to its ancient splendour by careful restauration. Twenty-two splendid apartaments,complete with kitchen and beautifully furnished,are located in the main building and in the tower and other adjacent "dipendances"of the Castle itself. |
